4G Mobile Technology and Mobile Market

4G Mobile Technology is the fourth generation mobile device communication standard that provides ultra-broadband internet access on the mobile devices.

Communicating through mobile includes two steps – mobile network access and access to mobile services. Generally, both of these steps are controlled by just one operator but in the 4G technology, the mobile services access will be extended to an Open mobile cloud. So it will be open to any developers/providers and it will be possible by any non-wireless industries like Google, Microsoft, etc to provide this service to their mobile users.

The 4G technology will be influencing most to the smartphone industry. Currently, most of the smartphones are running on 3G technology. But soon smartphone users will start opting for 4G which can improve the speed they connect to the internet. This technology will be useful for many smartphone users as it is being observed that most of them use their mobile devices as mini-computers. Most of the business tasks or personal tasks are performed nowadays on the move, and so the 4G technology will be an added advantage for users.

NFC Payment Systems can switch iPhone or iPad to iWallet

NFC technology is basically a short range high frequency wireless communication technology that allows two devices to exchange data over the distance of 10 cms. The idea of Apple Inc. behind incorporating this technology into its upcoming devices is to make the iPhone or iPad sort of virtual wallet so that users can make the payments easily.

The concept of making payments using mobile phones is gradually getting famous and catching on. There is even news that the upcoming next generation iPhone and iPad devices will be equipped with NFC capabilities enabling Apple users to make easy payments. According to the reports, it is indicated that Apple Inc. is working on the payment infrastructure of NFC which is necessary for actually making payments thru iOS devices.

In some ways, NFC is a great technology. It is a short range contactless technology solution that enables scanning of the device to recognize and identify an NFC device.

Recently, Starbucks introduced a system that allows iPhone users to make payments thru their iPhone devices. But this system was not using NFC technology. It actually connects an iPhone application with a funded card of Starbucks and allows customers to make payment by scanning the barcode image from the iPhone display. Inheriting NFC abilities into the iPhone and iPad will only be completion of half battle for Apple Inc. considering the fact that Google already holds an NFC technology capable Android smartphone – Nexus S, though still any sort of payment revolution is not seen.

iPhone NFC

There are two most important and critical barriers that must be resolved first in order to provide real-world value to the NFC technology. The first one is – there is no connection of the device with the creditors back ends like a bank account, or a credit card, or with some kind of wireless carrier backed system, which is actually most importantly needed at the time of making a transaction. The second problem is – Very few vendors have the hardware to support this technology and so it is needed that more and more merchants get involved with the concept of NFC. Having an NFC enabled smartphone without the vendor support will be useless in the real sense as it will be impossible to take advantage of it.

If we think of the NFC concept, then it is actually not a new idea at all. In the year 2009, Nokia and Visa actually together introduced the Contactless payment system in Malaysia. Today, Nokia mobile device is backed by Visa payment system successfully and is accepted in more than 1800 locations around the world.

Today, NFC is full of promises. It is possible for Apple to get succeed with the concept of NFC. If Apple provides the necessary NFC enabled hardware for free on its devices, it can be expected that retailers then wish to grasp this concept. If that goes successful than Apple users will no longer have to carry their wallets with themselves.

Statistically, today Apple is the leading Company in the mobile sphere across the world. In terms of selling easy to use software and hardware, Apple has always stayed ahead. The company is now concerned and concentrated on all the things that are related to the use of Near Field Communication. It will soon come up with the iPhone as the most crucial mobile device serving means of electronic payment. By this technology loaded, the iPhone can act as an electronic currency, as a credit card, as debit card, as electronic coupon, and also as the means of holding electronic tickets like for concerts, air tickets, or subway tickets.

It is expected by everyone that NFC feature that is also known as iWallet will be present in the upcoming Apple mobile device – iPhone 5. The reason behind not introducing it still is the lack of a clear universal standard. It is certainly the biggest problem as still the technology has not been out at all; it’s only available in very few locations presently. Also, United States has been little slow to adopt the concept of Near Field Communications [NFC] technology of making use of mobile phones for making payments. But it is heard that now it is gradually catching on and also Apple Inc. is working on its own version of NFC introduction for iTunes.

It is expected that Apple will once again make it grand by embedding NFC technology in its 5th generation iPhone and 2nd generation iPad. By this step of Apple and by the adoption of NFC by major leaders in consumer mobile electronics, the mobile payment systems will likely take a hold as never before in US.

Designers’ Dilemma of Android and iPhone Application Design

In our technology savvy world today, people make choices based on the applications offered for the smart phones. The differences in features, between the apps could help users during decision making process.

If you ask anyone carrying an iPhone or an Android mobile phone these days, what makes their phones smart or different and the quick answer would be “It’s all about Applications”. Apple is leading with 230,000 apps in its App Store while Android holds 70,000 apps.

Mobile Industry is getting hot now as the Android and iPhone are being matched in the limelight. The application development is almost similar in many phases of these two mobile leaders. Apple’s applications are written in Objective-C which is similar to the common C language while Android apps are written in Java programming language. Few developers possess the coding skills required for both the platforms – iPhone as well as Android. But what about the design?

There is a big question here that do designers have to design twice for creating the native apps for the iPhone and Android? According to the recent analysis, the definition and concept phases of the application designing process is quite similar in almost all platforms but the refinement and production phases differ. These phases require adaptations for creating a full-fledged application for both the platforms.

Let’s discuss the differences faced by mobile application developers based on these four phases – Definition, Exploration, Refinement and Production.

1] Definition: In this phase at the time of User research, a deep understanding can be acquired about the user needs and how those needs are currently being met. With this research foundation, you may uncover opportunities for new apps and develop innovative solutions to improve the existing apps. The research methods in this phase like Diary studies, User interviews, shadowing will be same despite of different platforms. Also, in this phase you will want to read each device’s technical specifications and UI guidelines. This will then help in the application development. During this study of specifications, iPhone and Android may have considerable overlap but there are some exceptions.

2] Exploration: In exploration phase, you start with brainstorming and sketching app ideas once you are done with candid research. This can be challenging for a developer because if he/she has more experience with one platform then it’s natural to descend to the familiar one. At the time of prototyping and testing the apps concepts, it gets extremely difficult to remain platform agnostic. Specifically for some apps like Facebook, Yelp, etc. it gets too difficult due to the varying navigation styles.
For example, there is no concept of home in the iPhone apps while in Android the app name in the header links to home. Secondly, android apps don’t have back buttons.
The best way to differentiate the navigation differences of iPhone and Android applications is to compare Facebook layout of both the devices.

radio

3] Refine: It will get more difficult during application refinements to incorporate abstract design elements. You may have certain features like sign-up, settings, etc. in an application where there is a need to follow platform rules. Some partial common UI controls for iPhone and Android available are –

  • Turn the feature On/Off – Switch in iPhone and Checkbox in Android
  • Current List selection – Disclosure arrow in iPhone and down arrow in Android
  • Choosing from any List – Checkmark in iPhone and Radio button selection in Android
  • Date/Time Selection – Picker inline style in iPhone and Picker overlay style in Android

4] Production: During the production phase, it is important to make sure that the images used are of correct resolution for each platform. But for this, not only there are differences in the platforms but also there are differences within the platforms. For example, in iPhone 4 there is a new retina display – 640 x 960 while the earlier phones were having 320 x 480, and same problem is with Android – the latest Droid X has 480 x 854 called as HDPI but the older ones were of lower resolution called as MDPI.
Both platforms provide icons for some common app tasks and also there are many services that sell icons at a reasonable price.

Currently, there are no good solutions to provide cross-platform support. The only solution for now is to rewrite the application into the desired platform’s native language.

Softweb Solutions has expertise in all mobile platforms and have an experienced team of mobile application developers for delivering interactive and attractive applications. Contact us at info@softwebsolutions.com for specific requirements of Mobile Application Development.
